Thing 6: More Flickr Fun

Ozarkland: L E A One Letter - R N I Silhouette n G 2 Period zero atsign L C P Ll

Like many web 2.0 sites, Flickr has encouraged other people to build their own online applications using images found on the site. Through the use of APIs (application programming interfaces), many people have created third party tools and mashups* that use Flickr images. Here are just a sampling of a few …
  • Mappr - allows you to take Flickr images and paste them on a map
  • Flickr Color Pickr - lets you find public photos in Flickr that match a specific color.
  • Mappr– create a photo mosaic from photos found on Flickr.

Discover more mashups, web apps, and Flickr tools.Discovery Exercise:Your discovery exercise for this “thing” is to:

  1. Explore some of the fun Flickr mashups and 3rd party tools that are out there.
  2. Create a blog post about one that intrigues you.

Personally one of my very favorite tools is FD ToysTrading Card Maker. And there’s a ton of librarians out there that have created their own Librarian Trading Card.So have some fun discovering and exploring some neat little apps. And if you're up to the challenge while you’re at it, why not create a trading card of your own. :)* Mashup Note: Wikipedia offers some great articles that explain mashups. Basically they are hybrid web applications that take features from one application (like Flickr) and mash it up with another (like a map). In this example, you get Mappr (http://mappr.com).

Stephanie,

How did you get the Spell by Flickr images to all go together on this post?

Say, are we going to have time to finish all 23 Things by the end of February? This is the middle of January and we are only on Thing #6.

Can you post the rest of the 23 Things so we can work ahead? I know their is the PLCMC list, but isn't LCPL going to change some?

Yes, I too can't see how we're going to finish by the end of Feb. at this rate. Maybe post two activities a week?

For adding the Spelly by Flickr images: Once you type in what you want, scroll down and you will see a window with HTML codes. If you copy them and open your blogger and create a new post. Click on the HTML link in the edit tools of the post and past the codes in your blog. Click the preview button to see what it will look like.

I too don't see us finishing by Feb. Also, I want to comment that for many on staff this is coming WAYYY to fast. Flickr is fun, but its got a lot of stuff there...

And if you force people to go too fast? You lose them as learners. That *isnt* good!

I would like to add: once you have pasted the HTML code in your post, you can go back to the Compose tab and click on each letter to move or re-size.

I think it's interesting, and not altogether unexpected, that one person says it's going too fast, one wants to work ahead, and one wants to know if we're going to finish in time!! We all learn at different speeds, and in different ways, as you all know - but taking into consideration the experience at PLCMC, this time period was workable for them, so we think it'll work for us....

As a part-timer, I definitely am not finding time to complete the learning tools during my working hours which are intensely focused on getting my "real" work done.
